Description
The black-tailed prairie dog captivates my attention every time. They are fascinating to watch. This photo was taken at the Smithsonian National Zoo in DC. Here's some interesting facts about these entertaining creatures:
(1) The black-tailed prairie dog are from the rodent family.
(2) They have a short lifespan of 3-5 years.
(3) Their diet comprises of 98% vegetables, not sure other 2%.
(4) They are tough, social animals that live in/around burrows deep w/in prairie soil.
(5) Coteries are family groups made up of one male, one to four females, and their young up to 2 years of age.
(6) Prairie dogs spend most hot summer days sleeping and are active above ground mornings and evenings. In cooler weather, prairie dogs may remain above ground all day. They emerge shortly after sunrise, and return to the burrow around sunset. Rain will often drive them to retreat underground.
