Description
I took this photo at the National Zoo in DC. This is an Abyssinian Ground Hornbill (also called Northern Ground Hornbills). These birds are black with white primary feathers and colored throats; males have red throats (such as the one in this photo), and females have blue throats. Blue skin surrounds their eyes. They have large, curved beaks used for picking up mice and other small prey. Their beaks feature casques, large keratin-based protrusion on top of their beak; have a yellow spot at their bases.
This particular hornbill was digging for worms and eating them.
Abyssinian hornbills are carnivorous. They eat small mammals, birds, reptiles, frogs, and insects. They also have long eyelashes to protect themselves from injury. The eyelashes are comprised of smaller, thinner feathers.
What I found interesting is that with their long legs, they prefer walking over flying, and they eat any small creatures that may cross their path through the African plains. The Abyssinian ground hornbills live in the sub-Saharan African plains north of the equator. A very interesting looking bird indeed. ENJOY! Emmy Vickers,
