Reticulated giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis reticulata),
Awww so precious! I love giraffes, do you? These two cuties followed each other around; they seemed to be best budds. So tall and exquisite. I love their long necks which allows giraffes to eat leaves from very tall trees. These two and two other giraffes live at The Baltimore Zoo In Maryland. To watch them so close up is amazing.
Giraffes live in eastern, central and southern Africa. They range across Savannah, grasslands, and open woods in search of trees, especially their favorite, acacias, to feed upon.
The giraffe is easily the tallest animal on earth. Can you believe that a male giraffe towers up to nineteen feet above the ground? Wow, now that is tall. Such height guarantees the giraffe its ecological niche; it can browse on leaves that Africa's other grazing herbivores can't come close to reaching.
Most of a giraffe's time is spent feeding. They prefer the thorny acacia tree to any other plant. They may also eat fruit and even soil that is rich in minerals. A giraffe can eat well over 100 pounds of food per day, What about water? Giraffes can go several days without water, but must eventually drink to satisfy their thirst.
What about sleep? Giraffes doze more than sleep. Deep sleep is brief (and dangerous, because of vulnerability to predators). While young giraffes lie down periodically throughout the day, adults rarely do. They rest while standing; they may lie down after dark, but only briefly.
