Description
Clara Barton Memorial at the Antietam National Battlefield.
September 17, 1862 is known as the bloodiest day in American history. On this day, at the Battle of Antietam, 23,000 Union and Confederate soldiers were killed, wounded, or captured in a bloodbath that ended in a draw. Working in the midst of this chaos was Clara Barton, a woman who would become a legend for fearlessly tending to the victims of her generation's
most tragic events.
The monument to Clara Barton at Antietam is located on Mansfield Avenue. It was dedicated on September 9, 1962. From the main plaque of the monument:
Clara Barton
During The Battle of Antietam
September 17, 1862
Clara Barton brought supplies and nursing aid to the wounded on this battlefield. This act of love and mercy led to the birth of the present American National Red Cross.
On the base, another plaque explains the red cross:
This symbolic red cross has been made from a brick from the chimney of the home where Clara Barton was born at North Oxford, Massachusetts on Christmas Day, 1821. Emmy Vickers,
