Description
Golden Gate Park's Conservatory of Flowers in San Francisco is truly an architectural gem. We came upon this gem while site-seeing in San Francisco last month ( February 3, 2014). It was absolutely breathtaking to me. Unfortunately we had other plans, so this is on my bucket list to revisit on my next trip, as it includes a zoo as well.
Construction of this architectural gem was completed in 1878. The Conservatory of Flowers is now the oldest building in the park and the oldest municipal wooden conservatory remaining in the U.S. This greenhouse and botanical garden houses a collection of rare and exotic plants from the high- and lowland tropics, aquatic and potted plants. For these distinctions and for its associated historical, architectural, and engineering merits, the Conservatory of Flowers is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the California Register of Historical Places, is a California Historical Landmark, and a San Francisco Designated Landmark.
Golden Gate Park, San Francisco's largest park, is bigger than New York's Central Park. About 3 miles long and 1/2-mile wide it covers 1,013 acres. Golden Gate Park has over one million trees, nine lakes, several fly casting pools and a lily pond within its borders. Strybing Arboretum and Botanical Garden, the Conservatory of Flowers and several museums are among its many attractions. Emmy Vickers,
