Description
Dirt Shower - Sooo Refreshing. Is this beauty enjoying a dirt shower or what? Love that smile. It is always fun to watch the Asian Elephants that live at the Smithsonian National Zoo in Washington, DC. This cutie was putting on quite the show for us today, cinco de mayo (2015). He/she even did a little shake dance (check out the video I captured at: coming soon, please check back ).
Asian elephants are fascinating. Here are a few interesting facts about them:
(1) Along with dolphins and great apes, Asian elephants are the only animals known to recognize themselves in a mirror?
(2) An Asian elephants trunk has more than 40,000 muscles, more than all the muscles in a human body! Wow!!!
(3) The Asian Elephants grow up to 21 feet long, stand up to 10 feet tall, and weigh up to 11,000 pounds. Females reach around eight and a half feet tall and weigh less than males. And interestingly enough, despite their size, elephants are able to walk silently.
(4) Elephants have the largest brain of any land mammal. In fact, of all land mammals, they have the greatest volume of cerebral cortex available for cognitive processing.
(5) Asian elephants communicate via rumbles, bellows, and moans. They also emit low-frequency infrasounds that can travel several miles.
So, would you agree that The Asian Elephant is an awesome and fascinating mammal? I love them!! Emmy Vickers,
