Description
Flashing My Fangs - Maned Wolf. The maned wolf is a member of the Canidae family in the Carnivora order. They are monogamous. They eat fruits, small berries, rodents, rabbits, and insects. The maned wolves are an endangered species in their native home of Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, and Bolivia.
Interesting fact: the maned wolf is known for the distinctive odor of its territory markings, which has earned it the nickname "skunk wolf." And at the Smithsonian National Zoo, you will definitely get a whiff of that skunk oder. Not realizing this comes from the maned wolf, many zoo visitors think that smell comes from an actual skunk.
There are 2 maned wolves living at this zoo. One is recouping from an injury (see zoo gallery for photo) and this one. I am trying to find out the names of these two beauties. A must see if you visit the Smithsonian Nat'l Zoo in DC. Emmy Vickers,
