Description
Ruppell's Griffon Vulture - Feather Dusting. This beauty was cleaning his feathers.
The Ruppell's griffon vultures live all throughout central and western Africa. They range from 14 to 20 pounds and can be 33 to 41 inches long.
Both males and females have a large wingspan that can range from 7.5 to 8.5 feet long. This allows them to climb altitude and soar for over 6 hours.
The IUCN lists these vultures as endangered. Their population is declining rapidly due to poisoning, hunting for trade, and habitat loss. However, the birds still live in great numbers in certain protected areas in central Africa.
This vulture and one other one live at the Smithsonian National Zoo in Washington, DC. They can be found close to the Connecticut Avenue, NW entrance of the zoo. They are housed with the gazelles. When being active, they are fun to watch. Emmy Vickers,
