Description
Whooping Crane Portrait,
This beauty can be found at the Smithsonian National Zoo in Washington DC.
What kind of bird is this? It's called a Whooping Crane, also known as Grus Americana. Whooping cranes are what we call migratory birds which means they live in two different locations. In the summer they live in one place and they migrate to another place for the winter. Did you know that Cranes migrate by day, following landmarks they have memorized? That's pretty amazing. Many people do that as well. They live in warm climate during the snowy and cold winters and then live at their second home during summer months.
What do Whooping Cranes like to eat? Shrimp, crabs, other aquatic animals and plants, berries, and crop grains.
A common question is where can one find Whooping Cranes? Believe it or not, these beauties migrate from Canada to Texas, and from Wisconsin to coastal Florida. Some live year-round in central Florida and Louisiana. And of course, you can sometimes find them at zoos.
This beauty was giving me a lot of attention which was exciting as this is not normally the case. A must see if you visit the Smithsonian National Zoo in DC. They are located past the elephants, over the bridge and in the bird section of the zoo. They are not in the bird house, you can actually find them outside. Emmy Vickers,
