Description
This photo was taken this past Saturday (2/22/2014) at the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore (formerly known as the Baltimore Zoo). The African Giraffes were inside because of the weather. Being in a closed-in space with them is amazing! This particular giraffe kept looking at me. He made me laugh because at one point he was just staring at me while he was chewing on his food. Eye-to-eye contact was really cool. We no longer have giraffes at the Nat'l Zoo which is disappointing. They are amazing and fun animals to observe.
About the The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore. It is generally considered to be the third oldest zoological park in the United States, having opened in 1876. Unfortunately in 2004, the zoo was struck by financial problems and was forced to reduce its collection size by closing parts of the zoo. The Main Valley was closed due to its age, being incapable of holding animals comfortably, and the Reptile House was closed. The reptiles, as well as gibbons and snow leopards were sent on loan to other zoos and aquariums.
In 2008, the zoo was featured in America's Best Zoos 2008.
Maryland Zoo in Baltimore is active in many conservation programs, notably the Mountain Gorilla Veterinary Program and Project Golden Frog; it is the zoo that breeds the greatest number of African black footed penguins. It also helps rehabilitate local wildlife, especially birds of prey such as bald eagles.
Being winter, many of the animals were not available, and that was very disappointing but I do understand. They also have rides and feeding programs you can participate in. They also have a train ride around the zoo. And last, you can actually ride a camel...my hubby did that years ago.
There is a lot of construction going on and a lot was closed. I look forward to coming back at a later time. Emmy Vickers,

Emmy, I'm so pleased to hear you had such an amazing close-up and personal encounter with this giraffe. Beautiful image! L/F
Emmy Vickers replied:
Thanks Clif. It was fun, though very frustrating because of the closed space and the lighting, but fun to watch them. Thanks for the compliment, like, and favor. As always I am appreciative of your continued support!
