Description
Maned Wolf Healing. This beauty injured her leg, and in this scene she is recovering. There is one other maned wolf as part of this exhibit, but for some reason, it was caged off.
I saw quite a bit of this beauty this go round. Most of the time she is hiding. She does a lot of pacing, I had to really watch and observe and anticipate once I figured out her routine. She did not stay still for long.
About The Maned Wolf:
The maned wolf stands approximately three feet tall at the shoulder and weighs about 50 pounds. It looks like a long-legged fox, with a reddish-brown coat and a mane along its back. Its ears are large and long (7 inches), its throat and tip of the tail are white, and its legs are mostly dark.
Maned wolves rotate their large ears to listen for prey animals in the grass. They tap the ground with a front foot to flush out the prey and pounce to catch it. Lastly, maned wolves are omnivorous, eating small mammals, insects, reptiles, birds, bird eggs, fruits, and vegetation.
When visiting the Smithsonian National Zoo, be sure to stop by this exhibit. Emmy Vickes,
