Description
This photo was taken on a sunny wintery day in February 2013. The sky was so clear and blue. This is the famous dome of our nation's capitol and building located in Washington, DC.
The United States Capitol dome is the dome situated above the United States Capitol which reaches upwards to 288 feet (88 m) in height and 96 feet (29 m) in diameter. The dome was designed by Thomas U. Walter, the fourth Architect of the Capitol, and constructed between 1855 and 1866 at a cost of $1,047,291. The dome is not stone, but cast iron carefully painted to appear to be made of the same stone as the main capitol building. It is actually two domes, one inside the other, and the total weight is 14.1 million pounds. For this information and much more, see websites: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Capitol_dome and http://www.aoc.gov/capitol-buildings/capitol-dome
Interesting fact: the bronze statue on top of the dome is called "The Statue of Freedom," also known as Armed Freedom or simply Freedom. Freedom by Thomas Crawford, stands 19 feet 6 inches tall and weighs approximately 15,000 pounds. For more info on the statue see website: http://www.aoc.gov/capitol-hill/other-statues/statue-freedom. I just got back from DC and saw this beautiful building under scaffolding and how beautiful to see this version from you without it.....great shot Emmy
Emmy Vickers replied:
Thank you Henk for the compliment, I appreciate it. I hear you. I was downtown DC earlier this week to try to get some shots just as it got dark. The Capitol looks awful with the scaffolding unlike the monument when it was under construction. I am so glad I got this shot before the scaffolding. I look forward to seeing the new and improved capitol dome. Thanks for visiting and sharing. I so appreciate you.
