Description
The Arts of War and The Arts of Peace Statues,
These amazing bronze statues were sculptured by James Earl Fraser, an American sculptor. Cast in bronze, Rome 1950. Did you know these two bronze statues were a gift from the people of Italy to the people of the United States? Yes indeed! What an incredible gift they are. The two statues are across the street from each other ... I say they are the gateway to the National Arlington Cemetery. A must see if ever in downtown DC across the street from the Lincoln Memorial.
About the two bronze statues (please see website for this and other information: (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Arts_of_War_and_The_Arts_of_Peace).
Description of statues: A winged horse in the center symbolizes the ancient god of poetry, Pegasus. Literature is represented on the right by a male figure holding an open book; Aspiration on the left, is represented by a male figure carrying a bow. The rectangular base is adorned with a row of thirty-six stars and a wreath. The thirty-six stars represent the number of states in the Union, at the time prior to the Civil War." ~ Smithsonian American Art Museum (this information and more can be found here: (https://www.waymarking.com/waymarks/WMW9M5_The_Arts_of_Peace_Aspiration_and_Literature_Washington_DC).
Another piece of infor for you: the Neoclassical statuary group consists of two separate elements, Music and Harvest and Aspiration and Literature, which frame the entrance to the Rock Creek and Potomac Parkway as is also the gateway taking you to the National Arlington Cemetery as I mentioned earlier.
The Arts of War and The Arts of Peace are contributing properties to the East and West Potomac Parks Historic District, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places on November 30, 1973.[1]
