With the Washington Monument in the background, this is the U.S. National World War II Memorial located on the National Mall in downtown Washington, D.C. It stands between the Washington Monument and Lincoln Memorial. This is a very powerful national memorial dedicated to Americans who served in the armed forces AND as civilians during World War II. It was this war that brought the United States out of the Great Depression, and the nation emerged as a world power. This Memorial is a reminder of the sacrifice, unity and service of a unique generation of Americans. They arose to eventual victory and the country transformed itself into a new age."

This World War II Memorial consists of 56 pillars and a pair of small triumphal arches surrounding a plaza and fountain. The fountain is off during the winter seasons.
