Description
Washington Monument,
This photo of the Washington Monument was taken on 02/26/2014. A nice, but cold sunny wintry day. Can you believe this photo was taken from my car while driving through Potomac Park in Washington DC? This view hides the scaffolding at the bottom. This is the iconic Washington Monument. As you can see, 3/4 of the scaffolding has been taken down. A lot of major work was being done on this monument due to the damage from the August 23, 2011 earthquake that rocked the northeast (registered a magnitude of 5.8).
The restoration of the Washington Monument is in its "final phases" of completion. The last bit of scaffolding will remain on the monument until all the joints up to 20-feet high have been repointed (filled in or repaired) and that workers are also in the process of finishing all necessary interior work.
The next step, is rebuilding the plaza around the monument. If all goes well, the monument will reopen sometime this Spring 2014. Emmy Vickers,
