Description
Can You See Me Now. This gorgeous green creature is a Meller's Chameleon, also known as trioceros melleri. Turning different shades to blend in with its environment, as you can see here, it was a beautiful bright green. Though it was very bright green, many folks could not see it right away because it did actually blend in with the green leaves that surrounded it. It almost looked like a large green leaf.
Meller's Chameleon exhibit can be found at The Maryland Zoo In Baltimore along the African Journey boardwalk. There were several chameleons; some harder to see than others.
Meller's Chameleons are native to the east African savannas of Malawi, Mozambique and Tanzania, found in bushland trees and tropical grasslands. They can grow to be almost two feet long, and have a crest that starts at the back of their head and joins up with a small horn on the snout, giving them the nickname Giant one-horned chameleon.
Meller's Chameleons move in a manner that mimics a leaf blowing in the wind. They sway back and forth as they maneuver along tree branches so they appear to be leaves and would be camouflaged enough to avoid notice by predators. Meller's are also one of the few chameleon species that are able to be housed in groups, which makes them a great choice for a zoo exhibit. These Meller's are ten-months-old and came to the Zoo from the Virginia Zoo, Norfolk, Virginia. A must see when you visit The Maryland Zoo In Baltimore. Emmy Vickers,
